A dull light spilt from the edge of the plateau as they carefully made their way up the last few hundred fenth. Mikel held back slightly, allowing the other males to get ahead of him and Sarah, who was running by his side. He wanted the fight, to kill the threat to his new home, to his mate and keep her safe, but she was at his side and he wouldn’t risk her by charging recklessly ahead.

He still couldn’t believe he’d found her a few short hacri ago. The gods had thrown them together, it was the only explanation and when all of this was over and he went to Bataar to collect Chloe, he would go to the local shrine and offer his thanks to them.

When they were twenty fenth from the ridge, Mikel, Ronin and Herik went on ahead to scope it out while Fallan stayed back with Sarah. Ronin and Herik split up and slowly made their way around the cusp of the ridge. While Mikel stayed where he was and surveyed the site.

The plateau was more like a valley between several small hills. The floor was covered in blades of light red grass and a small stream emerged from one side. Trees surrounded the valley on all sides and continued on all the way down the side of the mountain. The slavers had chosen a great spot to set down. Here they had a decent view of the surrounding terrain while being obscured from sight.

When Ronin and Herik returned a few metri later, Mikel led them back down the ridge and retook position at Sarah’s side.

‘One guard standing outside,’ Ronin said for Sarah and Fallan’s benefit. He had the helmet on and his voice had taken on an artificial quality. ‘I can’t see signs of any others, but that doesn’t mean they’re not watching from inside.’

‘I concur,’ Herik said. ‘The guard looks bored. I suggest we cause a distraction. Something that will attract the attention of both the guard outside and anyone watching inside.’

‘What can we use?’ Mikel asked.

‘I have flares we can use. We put it on the far side of the ship and set it to go off.’

‘That might attract your colleagues before the colonists can get here.’

‘Me,’ Sarah said.

Mikel glanced at her, then turned back to the other males. ‘Maybe something less incendiary… What do you mean, me?’ Mikel turned back to her.

‘Ronin takes me as the human female they’ve been hired to find. They do know about your group, yes?’

‘Yes. We came in with them.’

‘He tells your man over there, that the colonists are being rounded up by the rest of his people and he was instructed to bring me to the ship. I bet you, anyone on watch inside will be too busy watching the feed of us, to watch the area for anyone else.’

‘That is a good plan my Sarah, but it will never happen.’

Sarah rolled her eyes. ‘Mikel—’

‘No.

‘Now Mikel—’

‘No.’

‘It’s a good plan,’ Herik said. Mikel flashed a look of pure anger at the Setean.
